JSTOR, NoodleTools & Images

Chapin Databases:
  • Links to the databases are found on the password-protected "Online Resources" page (under "Library Services") on the Chapin web site.
  • Databases may contain reference articles (like an encyclopedia)or suites of reference titles;  newspaper, magazine, or scholarly journal articles; photos, online exhibits or video clips; selected web sites; teaching materials, reading levels, study guides or other learning resources.
JSTOR
  • JSTOR (j-store) is a database of scholarly journal articles in a wide range of disciplines and that includes complete back files up to the most recent 3-5 years.
  • Like Google, JSTOR Basic Search searches the full text of the article and will search for all words and phrases entered. Results can be displayed by relevancy (i.e. frequency of keyword appearance) or by date.
  • JSTOR can also be browsed by discipline and journal title.
  • JSTOR  complements other online scholarly research tools, such as Google Scholar and WorldCat that students may use and is highly recommended for AP courses and individual studies.
NoodleTools (primarily NoodleBib)
  • NoodleBib guides the user through the process of gathering & entering the needed information for the citation and then formats the bibliography entry. Bibliographies can be printed out or "shared" online with teachers.
  • NoodleBib also offers online notecards with different sections for quotes, paraphrases, and one's own ideas; these notecards can also be printed out or shared online.
  • Chapin has an institutional subscription to this tool which allows students and teachers to create personal folders in which to store bibliography lists and notecards for numerous projects.
  • See the US Library web page, Introduction to NoodleTools, for more on NoodleBib.
Images
  • AccessScience - Images can be located in several ways: find animations and online exhibitions by browsing general subject categories under Multimedia and Image Gallery tabs; get a list of thumbnails" by clicking "Search Options" and searching a keyword in 'figure captions'.
  • JSTOR - Searches also retrieve images in articles (click on Images from Articles tab). Chapin does not have access to ARTstor Images at the moment, however.
  • Annals in America Online -  For portraits, photographs, some video and audio clips, browse the timeline or general topics, limiting the results to "Multimedia". Searching by keyword is available but does not produce as many results.
  • Databases mentioned in connection with finding "Animal Photos" may also be used for finding images.
