Find books on Roman history using the Library Catalog (OPAC):
  • Best way to find a biography of an emperor is to search his name in KEYWORD search.
  • Useful general subject terms:  Rome, Ancient--History; Rome--History--Empire, 30 BC - 476
  • Don't forget to check the index.
Tips for indexes and reference books:
  • Names -- Look under the LAST name; if you don't know which is the last name in a Latin name, try all the names.
  • Places -- If you can't find a building or place in the index, look under the CITY name where it's located.
Finding classical literature (i.e. Greek or Roman authors) in the Library in the 800s (5th floor):
  • Loeb Classical Library -- small red and green volumes -- offers original Greek and Latin on one side of the page, English translation on the other and can be found in 870 - 888
Chapin Databases:
  • OED (Oxford English Dictionary) Online -- Can be used to find Greek and Roman roots of English words.
  • History Resource Center - World -- Has both magazine and reference articles on Greek and Roman history.
