Library Resources for Spanish

Country Information


Reference books may cover just one country or many countries in a region (see below for examples), and provide key facts, names, dates and statistics. Below are just a few of the reference books on countries:
  • REF 305.8 WOR   Worldmark Encyclopedia of Cultures and Daily Life (4 v. - Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe)
  • REF 324.2 POL   Political Handbook of the World
  • REF 952 CAM   Cambridge Encyclopedia of Japan
  • REF 956 MOS   Cambridge Encyclopedia of The Middle East and North Africa
  • REF 980 LAT    Latin America: History and Culture (actually 2 encyclopedias - one scholarly & longer (for older students), the other for students (MS & US)
Tips for finding Books using the Online Catalog:
  • The Library's catalog (or OPAC) is available at home or at school; go to Current Students web page, click on Library | Online Catalog
  • Search the name of the country as Keyword as well as Subject, to get all of the books that have pertinent information.
  • If you can't find a book on your country, search for books on the region that would include the country.
  • There are several useful series on countries; search the titles below as Series to get a listing of all titles: Modern Nations of the World; Enchantment of the World, Second Series.
  • "Global Studies: [region]" is a very useful series on different regions of the world (Africa, Middle East, Latin America, for instance) that includes "Country Reports" (on current political and economic status) and "Articles from the World Press" (articles on environmental, cultural, political and economic issues in various countries).
Chapin Databases & Online Magazines:
  • Grolier Online - Includes a Spanish language encyclopedia -- no need to translate!
  • Economist.com - Chapin has both print and online versions of this magazine with international coverage of business and politics.
  • History Resource Center: David Alger Memorial History Resource Page -- World section is a great source for finding reference articles on countries; also includes magazine articles from The Economist and other journals.
  • Proquest - Includes full-text magazine articles, current newspaper articles (including the NYT), and articles from the Historical New York Times (1851-2003). The NY Times has many articles on countries, and is also a source of photographs and images.
  • World Book Online - Includes a Spanish language encyclopedia -- Click tab at top left of screen.
