ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY FOR THE CHAPIN SCHOOL (Including Internet Policy)

The Chapin School offers its students, faculty and staff the opportunity to use computers on the network in the library, classrooms, labs and offices. Their use entails the same privileges, obligations, and responsibilities that come with using any school facilities. The following policy describes our philosophy and explains some of the specifics of use of the Internet and the school's computers.

C is for Changing Computers: I understand that I may not change anything on any computer. This means I will not change the desktop picture, sound, control panel, clock, colors, settings, fonts or rename any folders. Essentially, the rule of C means that the computer will look exactly the same before and after I work on it. I will follow the rule of C.

H is for Honesty: I understand that I must respect copyright laws and cannot take software from a Chapin owned computer. Copying software is against federal laws and Chapin rules. I understand that the rule of H also applies to MP3 files. Since an aspect of MP3 downloading involves getting music that I did not pay for, I understand that I will not download or transfer MP3 files on a Chapin owned computer except for academic uses. I understand that listening to music (iPods, laptops or other music devices) is an Upper School privilege restricted to the Student Lounge except for academic purposes. I will follow the rule of H.

A is for Applications: I understand that no one is to install any applications (computer programs such as AppleWorks, Kazaa, Limewire, StuffIt) onto a Chapin owned computer without permission and supervision from the Technology Department. I understand that I will not download or play games except the ones specified on the Current Students Web page. I will follow the rule of A.

P is for Passwords and Privacy:I understand that I will not give out my GatorNet password to anyone, let someone else use my account or use anyone else's account even with permission. The rule of P also means that I will respect electronic privacy and not look through someone else's folders or disks. I understand the only students who can send to mailing lists marked with (ML) are the girls with a * in their GatorNet names. I understand that giving out personal information (whether by e-mail or a social networking site) can lead to an Internet safety problem. I will follow the rule of P.

I is for Inappropriate Language or Inappropriate Web Sites:: I must use appropriate language on e-mail and must be careful when surfing the Web, avoiding any site I would not show my parents and teachers. Although all situations of inappropriate behavior cannot be spelled out, the rule of I means that what I do online should measure up to the usual Chapin standards of behavior. I understand that browsing or modifying social networking Web pages (e.g. friendster, myspace, facebook) is not to be done at Chapin whether on a Chapin computer or my personal laptop. I will follow the rule of I.

N is for Being Nice to People and Hardware: As a member of the Chapin Community, I will be nice to people and equipment when I use the computer. : As a member of the Chapin Community, I will be nice to people and equipment when I use the computer. Computer know-how at Chapin will increase if we help others and allow others to help us. The rule of N also means to be nice to people when speaking electronically to them or about them. I must also be nice to hardware, properly opening and closing a laptop, carefully handling CD-ROMs and electric plugs. I understand that I should use copying machines rather than printers to make multiple copies. I understand that I should use the color printers only when necessary. All of us need to be careful with our equipment and avoid wasting paper. I will follow the rule of N.

PENALTIES AND MORE INFORMATION
[ ] I understand that if I violate any of the above rules, I will lose GatorNet or Chapin computer privileges and may be subject to additional disciplinary actions.
[ ] I understand that the Web page of http://gatornet.chapin.edu/rules.html contains the required form allowing an Upper School girl to bring in her laptop.
[ ] I understand that Middle School girls are not allowed to bring their laptops to Chapin.
[ ] I understand that appropriate on-line conduct and behavior are more than a list of rules.
[ ] I understand that it is important for me to be a responsible citizen of our GatorNet on-line community.
[ ] I understand that under certain circumstances, The Chapin School may have access to my GatorNet mailbox.
Computer education is an on-going process. During the year, the Technology Department will provide additional instruction about policies and appropriate usage of Chapin GatorNet accounts.
