I think that the book has proven to be more popular I ever thought it would be since after I gave it to one of my favorite aides, others showed up demanding that if I felt the same way about everyone, everyone should get a copy of the book -- they even (those that read it) thought that it was a funny book (the parts that they supposedly read) -- as you can see, I don't have much trust and went to trusting in things that were more difficult to achieve. I think that a second printing is still in the works! (Although it's not hard to drum up interest in a book that is free -- a lot like my freshman year in college.)

Here is our voice recording of the beginning of Colleen's autobiography. With the help of Colleen's first cousin, Karen, we hope to finish the book this Spring and bring to Colleen on Dorchester Day June 5, 2005. Six Chapin girls drew a picture to go with the start of chapter one below (Fall 2003) and then voice recorded invidiual sentences below. Click on each icon to hear one sentence read aloud!

My first memories are from Dedham, but even so, I don't have a memory of Nobles, perhaps it's because of the neighborhood that I lived in. I later learned that Nobles was on the opposite side of a major highway. I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 7th, 1950. I remember very little about Cincinnati because my memories are those of a 5-year-old, and tend to be a bit lacking in the details. But there were several key things that truly affected me. One thing that affected me was the emotion of being alone and responsible for myself; I still wanted to be a baby, because that was so comfortable. I was also frequently affected by the creepy weather with lowering skies and tornadoes complete with hordes of crickets. At times the weather was almost biblical! My mother was very unhappy to be living in Cincinnati. She did what most women did in the '50s -- tried to fit into their new husband's lives, and forego their own dreams (remember, this is 40 years ago). But she never gave up on coming back to Boston, where she was originally from. My father also wanted to return, and he was a guy in a bit more control of the way things were happening. Eventually, they made it back to Dedham, Massachusetts where I lived for a another three years. I then moved West to Springfield, when I was about 7.

Click here for the 2002 version of the book which we will now enhance with pictures from Colleen's cousin Karen as we head towards June 5, 2005.

Community Service Event June 1st, 2003

Six Chapin girls travelled to Boston to visit the Boston Home and learn more about MS. We left NYC at 7am on a miserable rainy Sunday. We pick up one student and her mother in CT and ate a lot of food on the way to Boston. We learned about memory sticks and video cameras on the way up.

We got to Boston around 11 meeting up with one of the six girls and her mom. Sister Bridget greeted us outside and let us in. The residents were eating lunch and they served us pizza. The parade had been cancelled due to the inclement weather but we still had much to do.

During the meal, we circulated from table to table greeting and talking with the many residents. After lunch, each of us got a private tour of the Home with one of our new friends.

ET and SH went with Jane who takes voice lessons and sang for them. She had tape recordings of all of her songs. Jane told the girls she gets cold easily!

DS went with Lillian and helped her with a few chores such as making sure the television worked. Lillian also showed DS how Dragon Dictate worked for voice-recording e-mail.

KF went with Diane and she showed her a video on cats, which was very funny.

Later we saw watercolors by residents including Colleen and Jane

We concluded our visit by taking many pictures and videos and left at around 3pm. On the way back, we created an IMovie video out of all the separate ones we had made.

We arrived home at 7pm. Two of the girls did HW on the way back and took their files on memory sticks!

Marathon April 21, 2003

Click here for the 24 pictures from 4/21/2003

From Ms. Godfrey at Tower School: The whole experience was fascinating. 4 very wonderful interesting personalities in those chairs. We on Don's team were kept laughing by his remarks. (by the way, he's willing to o the whole route -- "no skin off my nose!!" Did you know those F15 which flew over are worth 46 million $$ each? He's a wealth of info. Jeff and Linda Hurley were absolutely the BEST. so spirited, energetic yet stable and calming. Easily got the diverse goup to feel a part of the team..everything from nametags in the beginning to hugs at the end!!! NO -- it started with phone conversations...even my husband said he felt he knew Linda Hurley and her dog!!

From Brian at Nobles: Hi Mr. Bergen I actually enjoyed pushing Michelle in the marathon and I didn't think I would be saying that , but I did. It was really a great experience to be a part of something great like that . I enjoyed walking the same route as so many marathoners and being cheered by the fans just the same. I enjoyed it all except maybe for the sunburn on the back of my neck. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to help some people. It was refreshing and put a lot of things in perspective for me. Thanks -Brian

From Mr. Snyder at Nobles: First of all Jeff and Linda did a superlative job in getting the day organized and keeping the positive energy high among all the participants. Our four 'wheelers' were all well supported during the morning with their 'team'. I was fortunate to be with Linda Stranieri again and her enthusiasm and positive spirit really helped us along. David Snyder, Jess Aibel and Mariah Rich (Nobles students) shared in our conversations as we headed in to Boston. As we got into Kenmore Square the crowds increased and the support from the fans was palpable. While a Boston Cop didn't let us get down Boylston St. it was still a very worthwhile day full of good conversation and positive energy.

Update 4/21/2003

for those of you who have not heard, we at The Chapin School have had to go "to plan B" in a major way due to a totally unexpected back injury that I suffered last week ... I keep reminding myself and others that we should not lose focus regarding MS and helping the residents of The Boston Home ... I also keep reminding myself that it was my original back injury in 1992 that got me connected with the Boston Home in the first place, so good things do come from bad and you just have to deal with disappointments!

due to the immense efforts of Linda Hurley, community service person from Nobles and Jeff Meech from the Boston Home, the show indeed is going on ... I have been speaking and working with Linda and Jeff and they are taking a reduced team of 4 wheelers on the marathon journey today along with Ellen Godfrey and "Team Tower", Richard McGowan from Temple Isaiah in Lexington MA and a group of Nobles students and teachers ... we hope to have pictures and information that I can share with all of you soon ... I will be updating this web page over the next few days as I hear from Linda, Jeff, Team Nobles, Team Tower and Team Temple Isaiah ... Steve Bergen (bergen@chapin.edu)

In Support of the Boston Home Wheelers (April 21, 2003)
Hi everyone! On April 21st, several teachers, parents, students from The Chapin School will be driving up from NYC to Boston to help push our friends with MS in their wheelchairs in the 2003 Boston Marathon. We will be joining several colleagues from my former school (Noble and Greenough School in Dedham MA) as well as other friends and colleagues around New England to help push a dozen "wheelers" from the Boston Home.
http://www.summercore.com/Bostonhome.html
As many of you know, I have been involved in this endeavor to bring technology to the Boston Home since the early 90s when I ruptured my own disc and could not stand up for a month. During that time I realized how much physical disability affects emotional stability and made a promise to G-d and myself that I would try to do something significant in my life to help people who are permanently disabled
http://www.summercore.com/bh/marathon97summary.html
If you would like to support our sixth annual marathon walk on Monday, April 21th, 2003 -- Patriots Day -- please make an e-mail pledge of $100 (gold) or $10 (silver) or $1 (bronze) by sending an e-mail note to marathon@chapin.edu; thanks much but please do NOT send any money yet. We need to see if we can make it up Heartbreak Hill on April 21 before asking you to send the actual donation! Every dollar counts -- we love pledges of any size!
Anyone who makes a "gold pledge" will receive a "green and gold" Marathon 2003 shirt ("The Chapin School is the proud sponsor of the 2003 Boston Home Marathon Wheelers") that is guaranteed to be a collectors item more special than the shirt that proclaims the Red Sox win the World Series in Fall 2003 ;-)
You will be helping us provide our friends with multiple sclerosis at The Boston Home
http://www.thebostonhome.org with computers, voice recognition software and video-conferencing resources. Additionally, I will be trying to establish the same connection with an MS organization in need in the NYC area
