New laptop procedures

revised 1/26/2006
  • Students may request a laptop for use in the library under the following conditions:
    • All the 4th-floor library desktops are in use.
    • You stay on the 4th floor, east side of the library.
  • Students may sign out a laptop to take to a classroom for presentations or at a teacher's request by getting your teacher's approval AND completing this LAPTOP form at the check-out desk. Limit two laptops per class; laptops must be returned to the library by the end of class.
  • For three or more laptops for use in a classroom (including the MMR), teachers should contact the Room 39 office at least three hours in advance by e-mailing HELP@chapin.edu or by calling extensions 4985 or 4998.
  • Students may sign out one of the two OVERNIGHT laptops at the library desk at the end of the school day for overnight or for the weekend.
  • Upper School girls may bring their laptops ONLY after completing this form along with a parent.
  • Middle School girls may NOT bring their laptops to Chapin but may seek special permission under special circumstances by contacting the Tech Department.

Other Reminders

  • REMINDER: No cell phones, music players and headphones in the Annenberg Center
  • Upper School girls may bring their laptops ONLY after completing this form along with a parent.
  • Middle School girls may NOT bring their laptops to Chapin but may seek special permission under special circumstances() ... in critical situations, Middle School girls can use this form

GatorNet Rules

  • GatorNet has two main functions: transferring files and facilitating e-mail. The value of GatorNet file transfer is to allow students to save files and transfer them from home to school. The purpose of GatorNet e-mail is to communicate with any teacher who has initiated a question or communication with you about academic coursework.
  • No food or drinks please in the library or in any of the computer labs.
  • Please respect copyright laws. No copying of software is permitted. No use of illegal, bootleg or pirated software is permitted, regardless of whether you or someone else did the copying. If you own a computer and have software, it is your responsibility to know whether or not it is legal. Half the software publishers in the 1980s are out of business as a result of illegal copying. Copying software is analogous to counterfeiting money -- in small doses it seems harmless, but it is stealing something that someone else produced. It is against federal laws and Chapin rules.
  • Follow GatorNet Netiquette and online rules. Use the same standards of language when on GatorNet and online that you would use publicly at assembly.

  • Do not use mailing lists; these are reserved for faculty and staff and have an (ML) in the name. Several students are marked with * and are given permission to use these institutional mailing lists. You can however, use your personal mailing lists.

Why is it against the rules for students to use Mailing Lists marked with (ML)?

    1. It would result in too much e-mail going around and around
    2. This has always been a faculty privilege
    3. It is also a privilege for designated student leaders
    4. In communities where students send to mailing lists, too many people (students and teachers) get burdened with many e-mail notes to open

If you have an important message to distribute to an entire class, please ask a faculty member or student staff member to do so for you. The reason that we have this school rule about mailing lists (ML) is to prevent too much spam being circulated. Spam refers to notes that get sent to a large group of people that might not be appreciated by everyone. Without this rule, too many notes that say "have a great day" or "snow is coming tomorrow" would circulate among the student mailing lists. If you send a note to an institutional mailing list -- marked with (ML) -- then your privileges on GatorNet will be reduced. We will ask you to UNSEND the note if at all possible and to try to better understand the rationale for decreasing spam.(help@chapin.edu)

  • Do not give your password to anyone or let someone else use your account.
  • No chain letters allowed on GatorNet regardless of content.
  • View only Web pages that you would be comfortable with a faculty member or a visitor looking at over your shoulder. If you are not sure, please choose QUIT. If choosing QUIT does not work, feel free to unplug the computer for 10 seconds!
  • In Classes 4 and 5, we would like students to view Web sites that are "school appropriate." This means not visiting sites that rate teachers or deal with popular music stars. We would like Class 4 and 5 girls to stay within and respect the boundaries of "school-appropriate" Web usage. As we head towards the laptop program in Class 6, it is very important for Classes 4 and 5 to stay within these boundaries!

  • Always cite your sources.

  • Do not connect, disconnect, move or adjust any equipment without the express direction of a member of the technology department or library staff.
  • Please ask for help when the printer runs low on toner or runs out of paper.
  • Quit GatorNet (if open) when you leave a desktop computer.
  • Game-playing is not allowed on Chapin computers; our goal at Chapin is to stay focused on "school-appropriate" computer usage!
  • If someone asks you to help, she does not mean that you can take control of the mouse and change her work. Teach her using words, not hands.
  • No one outside of the technology department or network services has permission to install software onto a desktop computer.
  • Students may not use credit cards over Chapin School Internet connections.
  • Students should not give out any personal information over the Internet. Students should be extremely cautious about completing forms and replying to messages from unknown senders.
  • Report any and all unpleasant or suspicious e-mail messages. Do not delete the message until a teacher or administrator has seen it.
  • Know how to cite your sources and what you are legally permitted to do. Violations of digital copyright are not acceptable.

  • Don't answer any e-mails from people you don't know.

  • At first your accounts will be "receive only" so that you can see if you can get First Class installed at home.
  • Then your accounts will be "Chapin only" so that you can send to TurnIn-CP5 (ML*) and your portfolio.
  • Finally, your accounts will become "Internet capable" and you will be able to send/received e-mail from non-Chapin people.
  • For Class 5, your accounts will be 30 minutes per day.
  • Your Internet e-mail address will be of the form 13JAD@chapin.edu and not your name. You will be the first Chapin class to use this pattern.
  • Your e-mail mailboxes will be accessible to Mr. Amerikaner and your computer teachers.
  • Your password must be of the form "noun" plus "number" and is to be shared only with your parents and computer teacher. This same "special word" will be used when in the CP6 LIP program. Examples might be: sneakers45, guitar246 or books617.

Chapin License
(120 minutes per day; 100 meg disk space)

Scroll down for Fairfax and Stringfellow License info

As part of getting my GatorNet e-mail account and my Chapin license, I have gone over the following points with my computer teacher or other member of computer department. The basic Chapin license gives me 120 minutes per day of time and allows me to store up to 100 megabytes on my GatorNet account. I have learned that Miss Chapin established our school in 1901 at 12 West 47th Street with seven teachers and 78 students; it was called Miss Chapin's School for Girls and Kindergarten for Boys and Girls. Miss Chapin retired in 1932 and died on March 8, 1934.

  • I understand that I am not to use to e-mail to gossip, bully or tease. We have a list of core values and No. 1 is respect.
  • I understand I need to be careful with what I say on e-mail. If I cannot say it aloud in front of Mrs. Rafferty or Miss Spillios or Dr. Hayot, then I should not put it on e-mail.
  • I understand that my reply preference needs to say "Reply Sender."
  • I understand that I am not to send to any mailing lists marked (ML) which are reserved for faculty and designated student leaders; however, I can send to mailing lists marked (ML*).
  • I understand that I can use GatorNet to store files but that I should not double-click on an attached file. Instead, I should drag the attachment to a folder before opening.
  • I understand I can wire my GatorNet to auto-forward to my AOL account (especially useful for Upper School students).
  • I have read the six rules posted on the school's AUP ("acceptable use policy").
  • I understand that the purpose of GatorNet e-mail is to communicate with any teacher who has initiated a question or communication with me about academic coursework. I understand that I am not to send e-mail to a Chapin teacher unless she or he has told me or e-mailed me that this is okay.
  • I understand that if my name is Jane Doe, my Internet address is Jane_Doe@chapin.edu; I have read through the information on Internet Safety posted on the GatorNet Web page.

Fairfax License
(180 minutes per day; 125 meg disk space)

How to upgrade your Chapin license to a Fairfax License

This upgrade to a Fairfax License gives me 180 minutes per day of time and allows me to store up to 125 megabytes on my GatorNet account. I have learned that Miss Fairfax became associate headmistress in 1913 and died on February 28, 1935. From 1932 to 1935, Miss Fairfax and Miss Stringfellow were joint headmistresses.

  • Re-read the rules on our AUP, which stands for acceptable use policy.
  • Create a WP document (probably Microsoft Word or AppleWorks) that includes a graphic and some text information about the hometown where one of your grandparents or parents was born.
  • Make sure you "cite your sources" and include the Web address ("URL"), title and author of the Web pages where you found the graphic and text. Save this WP document. The proper rules and formats for citing images and citing text are on our main Current Students Web page.
  • Open a new e-mail message. Attach the WP document. Include in the e-mail text or Microsoft Word document a summary (in your own words) of the most important computer rules at Chapin. Make sure that you state that you will follow all of the computer rules at Chapin.
  • Send this via e-mail to the conference ("fake person") called 2002 Wittenberg Door. If you are in CP9 and doing this as assignment A1, make sure you use a subject of A1 and also send to TurnIn-CP9 (ML*) and your portfolio.

Stringfellow License
(240 minutes per day; 150 meg disk space)

How to upgrade your Fairfax License to a Stringfellow License

This upgrade to a Stringfellow license gives me 240 minutes per day of time and allows me to store up to 150 megabytes on my GatorNet account. (You must have a Fairfax License before you can apply for a Stringfellow license.) I have learned that Miss Stringfellow became headmistress in 1935 and retired in 1959.

  • Go to the URL ("uniform resource locator") of http://gatornet.chapin.edu/truefalse.html which is the True/False Quiz posted on our main Current Students page.
  • Copy and paste the 16 questions into a GatorNet e-mail.
  • Answer each of the 16 questions as True or False and explain your answer in a few sentences.
  • You must get all 16 correct and the writing must be yours, even if you receive help from someone in learning the answers.
  • If you make any mistakes or have any bugs in your 16 answers, I will explain them to you or find a way to help you F2F ("face to face") or have you meet with your computer teacher or someone in room 39; you can then resubmit your Stringfellow License application e-mail on a different day!

graphic is from http://www.pics4learning.com, which states that "The Pics4Learning collection is intended to provide copyright-friendly images for use by students and teachers in an educational setting [including Web pages]."

lain them to you or find a way to help you F2F ("face to face") or have you meet with your computer teacher or someone in room 39; you can then re-submit your Stringfellow License e-mail on a different day!

Hayot License
(500 minutes per day; 175 meg disk space)

How to upgrade your License to a Hayot License

This upgrade to a Hayot license gives me 500 minutes per day of time and allows me to store up to 175 megabytes on my GatorNet account. There is no application for this license. The technology department issues Hayot Licenses for special projects in the current semester. By the way, Dr. Hayot became headmistress in 2003 and may never retire!
