Info About Streaming Videos at Chapin

A traditional video on the web has to travel in its entirety from "there to here" before it starts playing. Since a video on the web can easily contain over 100 megabytes, you might have to wait many minutes once you click before you can start watching. In contrast, a streaming video allows you to watch the beginning while the rest is coming in.

Did you ever wonder how much drive space would be taken up by importing your 10 minute movie? Or your 45 minute movie? I bet you did! Below is a handy guide to average file sizes according to movie length.
    Mini-DV
    1 Second = 3.5 MB
    1 Minute = 215 MB
    4 Minutes, 40 Seconds = 1 GB
    1 Hour = 13 GB

You must have QuickTime 6:

  • Click here to download from Apple.
  • All Chapin computers, both Macs and PCs, already meet this requirement. Please let us know if you come across a computer that is incapable of playing a streaming video.

Our policy on student names:

  • Please be sure to keep in mind these guidelines when creating videos.
  • Student names cannot be used in the videos (as part of the audio)
  • Student faces can be used only if they are on the "photographic permission" list (available from Jasmine Karasoulas or posted on GatorNet within Important Documents)

  • For the Prepare for Internet Streaming settings:

  • When done with the above the summary of settings look like this.
  • Click OK to close the Movie Settings window.
  • Choose where you'd like to save the movie, make sure it has a .mov extension, and click Save. Compression will begin - do not put your computer to sleep during this process! It is also recommended that you do not work on anything else while it is compressing.

Information on burning a DVD:

  • Place your computer is on a flat, stable surface.

  • Your computer should be plugged into the power adapter during the entire process!

  • Make sure that the blank DVD-R you are using fits these requirements. I highly recommend following these guidelines to avoid playback problems!

  • Open your project in iMovie.
  • Go to the File Menu, and select Share.
  • Click on the iDVD button, then click the Share button. iMovie will process, then launch iDVD. (click here for screenshot)

  • There are now numerous things you can do in iDVD. For example:
  • Click the Customize button on the bottom of the window, and a panel will appear. One of the choices is Themes By selecting one of the Themes you can customize the look of the DVD's menu, background music, etc. (click here for screenshot)
  • You can tweak the Theme by clicking the Settings button. This will allow you to change things such as the background or the audio, text appearance, button style, and so forth. If you come up with a Theme that you like, clicking the Save as Favorite button will let you save it as a Theme, and it will appear in the Themes list. (click here for screenshot)
  • You can add a slideshow using photos from iPhoto by click the Slideshow button at the bottom. Give the button a title, then double-click it and you will be brought to a slideshow creation page. Then just drag-and-drop your photos. (click here for screenshot)
  • During this entire creation process, you can check to see how much space your project is taking up by clicking on the Status button. You'll have about 4.1GB to play with.
  • Once you're satisfied, click the Burn button and follow the onscreen prompts for inserting a blank DVD. While it is burning DO NOT move your computer at all! Leave it on a flat stable surface and plugged into the power adapter.
