Darfur is a country in western Sudan. There are four main geographical features in Darfur. The eastern half of Darfur is covered with plains and low hills. Darfur also has watercourses which are called wadis. The western half of Darfur is very rocky and this region is too infertile to be farmed. Another feature of Darfur are the Marrah Mountains which are volcanic plugs..

The conflict in Darfur has been declared genocide, "the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group." (from the url of: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/genocide) It is between the Janjaweed, a militia group, and the non-Baggara people who are land-tilling tribes. The Sudanese government has provided arms for the Janaweeds and has participated with them in attacks against the non-Baggara people. Approximately 450,000 deaths have been reported since April 28. Over 2.5 million non-Baggara people have had to flee from their homes.

Carolyn B. Maloney is my congressional representative. She is a democrat and represents New York's 14th Congressional District in the House of Representatives. Maloney was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on February 19, 1948. She was raised under a Presbyterian household and graduated from Greensboro College in 1970. Maloney was elected to the House of Representatives in 1992. Now in 2006, she is running for Congress of New York.
