What is the Barclays English Premier League?
The Barclays Premier League often just called The Premier League is a professional soccer league in England. The players who play for the 20 teams of the league are some of the world's best soccer players. It was founded in 1992 and was originally called the FA Premier League. The teams that are part of the Premier League are the twenty best teams in England. Though the matches take place in England and it is a British league, the players are from all around the world.
The Structure of the League
The Premier League is a corporation. It is jointly owned by 20 clubs who are each shareholders in the company. The clubs vote on things such as rule changes and new contracts. They elect a chairman, Chief Executive, and a board of directors who oversee the workings of the league.

The Season, Competition, and Points
The Premier League's season lasts from August to May. There are twenty teams and every team plays all the other teams in the league once at home and once away. The teams are some of the world's best including Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. Each season there are a total of 308 matches. Every time a team wins they receive three points, with a tie they receive one point, and with a loss a team gets no points. The ranking of the teams depends on how many points the team has and if there is a tie for points, the team with the highest goal difference is ranked higher. At the end of the season the team who has the most points is the champion and receives the coveted trophy. At the end of the season the teams who are in the three lowest places are relegated to the Champions League, which is the league that is below the Premier League. The top two teams from the Champion's League, which is the league ranked right below the Premier League, move up to the Premier League. There is also a series of play-off games in the Champion's League between the third to sixth place teams. The winner of this also moves up to the Premeir League. .

Who Sponsors the League?
Every year since the founding of the Premier League there has been a sponsor who determines what the league's name is. From 1993-2001 the league was sponsored by was, which is the brand name of a lager beer company. From 2001-2004 the international credit provider Barclaycard. Since 2004 and until 2010, Barclays bank is the sponsor. Though each sponsor uses their own company's name, each sponsor has referred to the league as Premiership.
