The 1-1-1 Pattern

Do you know what a suffix is? A suffix is an ending we add to a root or base word that may change the meaning of the word. For example, -er is a suffix. When you add -er to "hot", you get "hotter". When you add -ing to "swim", you get "swimming". Other suffixes include -ing, to "swim", you get "swimming". Other suffixes include -ing, -er, -ed, -y, and -est.

A 1-1-1 word has one syllable and one short vowel that is followed by one consonant. Words such as run, dim, and shut are examples of 1-1-1 words.

When you add a suffix like -er, -ed, -ing, and -y to a 1-1-1 word, you double the last consonant before adding the suffix (shut + t + ing = shutting).
