OVERVIEW

Before 1914, Europe was bursting with optimism.  Technological advancements, social reform, the spread of democratic institutions, and Europe's dominant place in the world all contributed to a sense of pride as well as faith in future progress.  But this rosy outlook veiled inner turmoil that was leading Europe to the brink of destruction.  The European state system was being torn apart by the forces of militarism, the alliance system, imperialism, and nationalism.  Despite the existing problems, few saw the crisis looming.  World War I was a catastrophe that shattered Europe and sent it spiraling into despair.
