OVERVIEW
Before 1914, Europe was bursting with optimism. Technological advancements, social
reform, the spread of democratic institutions, and Europe's dominant place in
the world all contributed to a sense of pride as well as faith in future
progress. But this rosy outlook
veiled inner turmoil that was leading Europe to the brink of destruction. The European state system was being
torn apart by the forces of militarism, the alliance system, imperialism, and
nationalism. Despite the existing
problems, few saw the crisis looming.
World War I was a catastrophe that shattered Europe and sent it
spiraling into despair.
