Symbolism and the Greek Gods

The Greek Gods and Goddesses

The Importance of Symbolism

While one may not realize it, symbolism makes up a key facet of our society. Literary, musical, theatrical, and spiritual symbols are used constantly each day. Leaders of countries have used symbolism in order to establish themselves as powers, and to reach their country's people. Zodiac signs are also prominent in society, and many believe that these signs can reveal a great deal about one's personality. These are only a few examples of how valuable and meaningful symbols can be. A lot of us are unaware of the meaning behind symbols. When we see a crown, for example, most of us would immediately think of power, as in the power of the monarch. Did you know, however, that a floral crown stands as a symbol of the springtime?

Ancient Greece

Think of how imporant God is as a figure in religions today. The Greek Gods and Goddesses were seen as important symbols to those living in ancient Greece, and are still valued by many. Worship of these Gods was seen as a freeing and fulfilling experience. In addition, the Greek Gods and Goddesses serve as a link for many people to their heritage and culture. Congregating during time of worship gave people a sense of belonging, and allowed them to join with others in their society to think and pray towards common fixations.

There are a total of twelve major ruling god and goddesses, and these rulers sat in power at Mount Olympus. For this reason, they are referred to as the Olypians.
