Sound of the Week

Each week, we focus on a new letter sound and practice saying the sound the letter "usually" makes. Throughout the week, we work through several activities to build clear recognition of the sound.

  • We introduce the sound in class, and we brainstorm a list of words that begin with the letter sound.
  • Each girl then chooses one word from the list to illustrate. The picture and word cards are added to a "Sound of the Week" chart to be referred to throughout the week.
  • A sand-letter page is created. Each student draws and labels four pictures beginning with the sound of the week. Students can use the wall chart to get some ideas. Once the pictures and words are finished, she traces the letter in the center of the page with a glue-pen and then sprinkles it with sand.
  • As a class, we read and recite a rhyme for each letter sound we are learning. This rhyme is placed with the previously completed sand letter in a "Sound of the Week" binder.

Each letter is listed below with sample words and the poem we learn for that letter sound.
