How to cite text you found on the Web

Citation Format

"Title of the Web page." Name of the Web site. Date Viewed < URL >

"Tips on using this site." SimScience. 25 Feb. 2005
< http://simscience.org/tips.html >

Note: If the author is clear, you would simply add that at the beginning.
In the following example, I have pretended that I am the author.

Cane, Natasha. "Tips on using this site." SimScience. 25 Feb. 2005
< http://simscience.org/tips.html >

Need more of an explanation? Read these hints.

Citing text you have found on a Web page requires 4 basic pieces of information:

  1. The title of the Web page or article
  2. The name of the Web site on which it appears
  3. The date you viewed it
  4. The URL

In the case of the Web page shown above, the title is: "Tips on using this site."

The name of the Web site on which this page appears is SimScience
(to make sure, I navigated back to the Web site's homepage by removing everything in the URL after the .com part).
