Finding Primary Sources

To find Primary Sources in Books:
  • Two subject terms that indicate primary source material: [event or historical period]—Sources; [event or historical period]—Personal narratives.
  • General collections of documents on American history are listed under the subject: United States--History--Sources.
  • Title words that often indicate a collection of primary sources: "documentary history"; "documents"; "reader"; "writings"
  • Search under the series title, "Eyewitness history" for a number of primary source collections.
To find Primary Sources in Chapin Databases:
  • History Resource Center - David Alger Memorial History Resource Page - US History
  • Annals of America - arranged chronologically (good for browsing); also includes images (mostly portraits & prints).
  • Historical New York Times - part of Proquest database; offers news stories, editorials, letters to the editor from 1851-2003
