Philosophy Statement

The Learning Resources Department is committed to helping create an environment that respects and serves different learning styles. The members of the Department work closely with both teachers and students: with students to help them realize their full potential and with teachers to make them better able to reach all students in their classroom. In addition, the Department works with students with documented learning disabilities who benefit from various classroom accommodations and other types of assistance. Reasonable accommodations, such as extended time testing, may be granted to enable students with documented learning disabilities to complete The Chapin School curriculum successfully.

A student who is requesting accommodations must provide an appropriate written evaluation documenting her learning disability. This evaluation must meet the professional guidelines established by the Learning Resources Committee and be submitted to the Department Head, Ms. Brenda Philip. The Learning Resources Committee will then review the evaluation to make sure it meets the guidelines. For further information go to the Chapin Disability Accommodation Policy on the Learning Resources website. Once the evaluation has been reviewed and approved, the Department uses the report to develop a student profile that is shared with faculty members who teach that individual so that they can better understand her areas of strength as well as potential challenges within the classroom.
