Symptoms of Problems within Each Domain
1.) Visual-Spatial: In kindergarten and early elementary grades, children with problems in this realm may exhibit some of the following behaviors:
- Have difficulty differentiating coins
- Have difficulty differentiating coins
- · Have difficulty discriminating among operation signs
- · Have difficulty discriminating among operation signs
- Have difficulty noticing and identifying relationships and differences among shapes
- Have difficulty with such concepts as right, left, up, and down
2.) Memory: In kindergarten and early elementary grades, children with problems in this realm may exhibit some of the following behaviors:
- Have difficulty retaining newly presented material and instructions (short-term memory)
- Have difficulty solving multi-step operations and word problems in logical manner (working memory)
- Have difficulty retrieving math facts (long-term memory)
- Have difficulty sequencing such things as days of the week and months (temporal-sequential memory)
3.) Language Processing: In kindergarten and early elementary grades, children with problems in this realm may exhibit some of the following behaviors:
- Have difficulty understanding spoken directions (receptive language)
- Have difficulty counting aloud (expressive language)
- Have difficulty with rapid oral drills (expressive language)
- Have difficulty expressing their ideas orally in fluent, clear sentences (expressive language)
- Have difficulty reading and understanding a word problem (reading comprehension)
- Have difficulty with specialized math vocabulary
- Have difficulty understanding multi-meanings of words. For instance, a child may understand the term "volume" only as it applies to the loudness of a sound and not understand it as a geometric concept.
4.) Graphomotor: In kindergarten and early elementary grades, children with problems in this realm may exhibit some of the following behaviors:
- Have difficulty with number formation, e.g., transposition, and/or reversal
- Cannot place words or numbers evenly and clearly on a page
- Have tense, awkward pencil grip
- Write at an unusually slow pace
5.) Executive Function: In kindergarten and early elementary grades, children with problems in this realm may exhibit some of the following behaviors:
