Web Page Guidelines for Students
Chapin Gold in HTML codingThe official "gold" offsetting color for HTML coding has a hexadecimal number of FFA000. This was decided by Ms. Taylor (our Director of Communications) and Ms. Mendelsohn (our Web Writer) on 10/31/05![]() Student names on Chapin Web pagesUnder NO CIRCUMSTANCES may students' names (first or last) appear. That is why we use 3 letter initials.Internet SafetyThe rationale for avoiding names on the Web is connected to the importance of Internet Safety for all students. Posting personal info on the Web (where you live, what teams you participate in, names of people you know) can lead to Internet Safety issues. There are many strange people out in cyberspace (some Red Sox fans, some Yankees fans and some non-sports fans) and it is crucial to be safe. What we have learned over the last 10 years is that it is not a question of IF but WHEN.Graphics and AttributionIf you use any graphic on your Web page that you did not create yourself, whether it is clip art from another Web site or a logo, you must get permission from the graphic's creator or the Webmaster of the other site. You must then post a message somewhere on your page that says something such as, "Graphic used with permission from www.clipartwarehouse.com." Do NOT include graphics on your Web sites unless given EXPLICIT directions from your teacher.Special PasswordThe password for your Web page or CP9 blog page or bloglines needs to be of the form Yankees42 where you have a key word followed by a number. We call this private word your "special password" and it needs to be shared and recorded by your teacher.Links and Inappropriate Web SitesYour teachers will always be very careful and specific about assigning you to create links to other Web sites. There are many Web sites like www.martinlutherking.org that are problematic in their content even if they appear to be safe and accurate. We trust you at Chapin to practice good judgement and to be responsible. Unlike some schools, we do not use filters at Chapin. Do NOT include links on your Web sites unless given EXPLICIT directions from your teacher.ContentThe teacher of each course directs the exact content of what is to appear on the Web page. Nothing else may be added by the student. This is the most important rule on this page. You may not even include a one line sentence about whether you like a movie or not UNLESS specified by the teacher. The purpose of the Web page is to allow you to post designated academic work and to practice HTML programming.SpellingPlease use the trick your computer teacher has taught you regarding Microsoft Word to eliminate any typos or spelling mistakes. This is crucial. You copy and paste your Web page into Microsoft Word and use the magical feature of Microsoft Word that highlights most of your spelling mistakes with red.Language ConventionsPlease use uppercase W and two words when talking about Web page or Web site or Web link. Please use uppercase I when talking about the Internet. Please avoid GUYS when talking about GIRLS or a MIXED group.HTML ConventionsPlease use the MARQUEE tool with just ONE line of text.CP9 iSpace Blogs and Web PagesEven though these pages are hosted outside of Chapin, all the same rules about "appropriate language" and "no use of names" apply. The i of iSpace stands for intellectual and is intended to convey the purpose of these Web pages (as opposed to social networking Web sites).
Language Tips TIP#1: Internet should be uppercase in all usages TIP#2: Web page and Web site should always be two words with the W uppercase TIP#3: Avoid GUYS when talking to a group of girls or a mixed group of students or faculty TIP#4: Use FLIER with an I not with a Y TIP#5: When referring to a Chapin class, please use the number value![]() TIP#6: E-mail should be spelled with a dash.
