It will need to be posted by Thursday, April 20th at 9:00 pm (no turnin; just posted onto the Web)

  1. The Visuals: the graphic and explanation (30 points for IMAGE & 10 points for Paragraph)
  2. The Sound: the voice recordng (30 points)
  3. The Posting of it: (20 points) a separate page (as you have a separate typing page) a21.html. The names of all things related to this assignment should be A21JAD .....jpeg; .wav; .html.....will explain in class...
  4. The Typing posted onto your separate typing.html page (10 points)

  • 1. The Visuals:
  • Characters (as you know:-): Anne, Margot, Mummy, Pim, Mrs. Van Daan, Mr. Van Daan, Peter Van Daan, Dussel
  • Pretend you are a character in the Secret Annexe .. You will search for pictures on the Web of the CHARACTERS and add it to your graphic with proper attribution. You may include the image of more than one character. Your attribution can be in a light color and very small font so that it does not disturb the design. Yes, the cat is a character:-)
  • Design your ideal Secret Annexe layout using Appleworks Draw or Paint (floor plan, aerial view) .. Who lives near you ... How big is your room ... What are other concerns? Everything in the rooms should support the IDEAS of the character you have chosen. Your drawing must include your 3 initials (not your name) and your character's name (for example, "Mrs. Van Daan's Ideal Floor Plan"). It should be large enough for the viewers to read.
  • You will learn the techniques in CP6, use CP6 class and HW time to complete your diagram .. .this will include the use of AppleWorks Draw and Paint and Photoshop ...
  • Save the working file as A21JAD.cwk (use YOUR initials:-). You will be able to make adjustments to the document as long as it is saved in Appleworks. When you are ready to post it you will save it as a .jpeg file.
  • 2. The Sound:
  • You will be audio recording via First Class an audio file that contains your initials (not name) and will be learning the programming commands in HTML so that people will listen to your voice as they see your graphic on the Web.. speaking clearly and letting the world know more about your character and why you chose him/her will be important ...
  • You will voice record a short one minute (or less) message about your Annexe using FirstClass recording skills.
  • 3. The POSTING of it:
  • You will be posting your graphic on your Web page in your Gallery and writing text directly onto your Web page (not on the graphic) which explains why you chose that character ... example: My room is in the attic because that's where the mice are. --Mouschi the Cat. The text directly on your Annexe should be: Your initials, your Character's name, basic labels of the rooms and attribution.
  • You will need to create an A21JAD.html, your image source (A21JAD.jpg) will need to be put INTO that A21JAD.html, your sound file will need to be embedded or linked (A21JAD.wav) onto that A21JAD.html and your explanation paragraph will be written DIRECTLY onto that A21JAD.html page.

Click here to see an example! *Try a different browser if the sound does not work*

Remember: to add the background of the Web page; probably best to copy from your typing.html page OR you can copy the source code of the example but replace the images and sounds with YOUR OWN work!
  • AND The Typing:
  • TYPING homework to be posted to your typing Web page. If you are at the Varsity typing level or faster you should have someone time you 5 times and put your typing speed into a table with the dates that you were timed. If you are below the Varsity typing level you should type 8 times and list it on your Typing Web page with the dates. These will represent the typing for the two weeks: April 4th - April 13th.
  • IMPORTANT: Your GRADE on A21 WILL be AFFECTED by any unfixed bugs, missing (example: typing.html link) & non-working links on your Web page OVERALL

Assignment A16 due Monday 9pm Feb 9th (from Ms. Paige and Mr. Bergen)

Click here for a PDF version of the e-mail information form requesting to be taking your laptop home during the weekend.
Remember that it is UNLIKELY that you will be able to get online from home.
Make sure you have your graphics on your laptop BEFORE you leave Chapin (you are allowed to do more than one picture).
Make at least one composite picture using one of the teachers below, the Don't Be Afraid of Change photograph
that hangs on the fourth floor near the library and using 1 of the 5 pictures of a computer here:
one ... two ... three ... four ... five
Here are some the teacher graphics you can use for the computer; all teachers listed below have given permission!
Ms. Allegra | Mrs. Allen | Ms. Boals | Mr. Chamorin | Mr. Chapman | Ms. Cohen | Mr. Davis | Ms. Deevy | Ms. Farrier | Ms. Griffin
Ms. Herman | Mrs. Katz | Ms. Lartique | Ms. Lawrence | Ms. Morton-Johnson | Ms. Negin | Mr. Palermo
Ms. Pugliese | Ms. Quigley | Ms. Shure (formerly Ms. Aldige) | Ms. Stillman | Ms. Strock

Suggestions, guidelines and directions re A16

  • Create a folder on your laptop called A16 Photoshop ... transfer the "Don't Be Afraid" picture plus one teacher picture plus one computer picture.
  • Launch each graphic into Photoshop
  • Using rulers, be concerned about sizes and proportions and change image sizes accordingly
  • plan A: use copy and paste (bad method)
  • plan B: create a new layer and use copy and paste (much better)
  • plan C: use the rubber stamp tool (fairly good method)
  • plan D: use the selecting tool with the special + and - tricks to copy into a new layer (very good method from Mr. D'Onofrio) ... resize to get correct proportions ... then use the magic wand tool to eliminate excess
  • *** most important *** take frequent screen snapshots with apple shift 4 so that you will be able to make a PowerPoint presentation showing your progress next week.
  • When done, choose a color on the canvas and put your 3 initials into one corner in that matching color.
  • Also, put a border of 5 pixels ("stroke") on the outside of the graphic in that color.
  • Make sure you flatten your graphic and make into a JPEG (don't choose low quality, but rather medium quality).
  • You must complete at least ONE by Thursday 9pm Feb 9 and post onto your Web page. We will be working on these (as well as teaching you) in our classes this week.
  • Passwords for your Web pages are unlocked ... roses are red, violets don't like skype-ing ... a weekly reminder to remember your typing!

Here are samples by the girls from 2010 who did the same assignment in Spring 2004

  • Palermo 1 | 2 | 3 | 4
  • Quigley 1 | 2 | 3
  • Hayot 1 | 3 | 4
  • Pugliese 1
  • Deevy 1 2
  • Herman 1 | 2 | 3
  • Katz 2
  • Negin 1 | 2 | 3 | 4
  • Stillman 1 | 2 |

Assignment A15 due Thursday 9pm Feb 2nd (from Ms. Paige and Mr. Bergen)

Tech Skills Associated with A15:
  • You need to have a thumbnail of your music piece LINK to the actual full size graphic
  • Once your music piece is done, you make it into a PDF using the APPLE-SHIFT 4 trick ... this is a MAC only trick ... making a PDF on a PC is more involved
  • Once your PDF is made of the form Picture 1 or Picture 2 or Picture 3, you double click it which launches it into PREVIEW
  • You then EXPORT it so it is a JPEG of the form A15JAD.jpg
  • To make it into a ONE INCH TALL thumbnail, you CONTROL and CLICK on the JPG and launch into Photoshop ... you then change the size to be 1 INCH with IMAGE SIZE and then save it as a JPG using the form A15JADtiny.jpg
  • If you put these two files into your HOME PAGE FOLDER on your Web account, you can do the HTML programming from home!
  • Audio Tips ... when you voice record on First Class, it makes a file called VoiceMsg.wav as an attached file ... using good quality speakers helps make the WAV file a quality file ... move this file onto your desktop and then rename it to be A15JAD.wav ... finally think of it as a JPG graphic and move it into your HOME PAGE folder on your LIP account ... the programming for a sound file is the same as for a graphic using A HREF ...
Click <A HREF="A15JAD.wav">here </A> to listen to my song!
Other Guidelines Associated with A15:
  • No names but rather initials on the music piece
  • A15 should go in your "gallery" which you may have called Art Gallery ... you can now change it to "My Gallery"
  • Extensions must be requested before 9pm
  • If you have been sick for 1 or 2 of the days this week, that counts as a "good reason" for the extension
  • Bugs are most expensive this week in terms of points lost ... you have 3 methods or more to exterminate bugs
  • If you are not approved for an extension for a "good reason" then you lose 5 points for each day late, e.g. Friday 9pm or Monday 9pm or Tuesday 9pm
  • There is always a plan B if you get stuck .... all you need to do is FIO ("figure it out") or MIU ("make it up")
  • For bonus points (if you get done before the 40 minutes), you can post your audio on the Web
  • grading spces? -5 for each day late without extension (Fri 9pm, Mon 9pm), update date -2, significant bugs -8 or adjusted by teacher, typing not posted -5
Miss Norchi will explain the specifics and highlight details on e-mail or in class this week. Below is an overview:
  • Compose a pentatonic melody in C major that begins on DO and ends on DO ... DO is C ... you can write DO as uppercase or lowercase but if you want the high DO, you must use DO' or do'
  • Time signature is 4/4 ... the top number is # of beats in each measure ... the bottom number means that the quarter note equals 1 beat
  • This must consist of 8 measures or more
  • You can use quarter notes, half notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests
  • Please write Solfege names under the notes
  • Click here for a sample from Jane Anyone DoeADeer ... she made a few mistakes and did not follow all the SPECS below from Miss Norchi
  • You will soon be working on your "Solfege-Pentatonic Melody" assignment on Notepad!
    1. Create a title and write in "Title" Box
    2. Write your own name in the "Composer" Box
    3. Select WOODWIND then FLUTE in the instrument section
    4. Select the time signature 4/4
    5. Keep the melody in C Major
    6. Compose an 8 measure melody beginning on C and ending on C . This song is going to be in the C Major Pentatonic Scale. Therefore you may use only C,D, E, G, and A Do not use F and B in this assignment.
    7. You may use quarter notes, half notes, whole notes, and eighth notes and of course rests.
    8. I am making one CHANGE from the assignment on your webpage: DO NOT WRITE THE SOLFEGE NAMES UNDERNEATH THE NOTES (ie. do, re, mi) In this assignment you will only compose the notes on the staff.
    9. Please remember not to use chords-only a single melody line.
  • A REVIEW: the names of the lines and spaces:
  • Five Lines on the Staff from bottom to top:
    First line: E
    Second line: G
    Third Line: B
    Fourth Line: D
    Fifth Line: F
Small Line below the staff: Middle C

    Four Spaces:

    First Space: F
    Second Space: A
    Third Space: C
    Fourth Space: E
Space below the staff is D

    Good Luck! Miss Norchi

Assignment A12 due Thursday 9pm Dec 15th (from Ms. Paige and Mr. Bergen)

Click here for an ASCII table
  • Here is more info about binary and ASCII ... ONE ... TWO ... THREE ... ASCII stands for American Standard Coding Information Interchange ... every uppercase letter has an ASCII code between 65 and 90 which can then be translated into binary ... click here for ASCII info from Wikipedia and click here for the a wonderful chart of ASCII printable characters
  • Here is an attempt via audio to teach you about this lesson ... click here
  • Pick a famous person whom you admire ... this could be an athlete, an actor, an actress, a politician ... it may be someone living or it may be someone who is dead ... however, the person you choose must be someone who is/who was not a white male ... in other words, the reason that Jane Doe will not get a great grade is because she did not read this last SPEC ... the person whom you choose must be different from Larry Bird in 1 of the 2 characteristics ... either non-white or not male ... ... Larry Bird unfortunately has something in common with all the elected presidents of the United States ... they are all white and all males!
  • Create an Excel spreadsheet with your initials in 72 point size (one inch) in one cell ... your file will be saved in the form of A12JAD.xls, using your initials of course and not Jane's!
  • Type the first name of your famous person in vertical fashion in upper case letters
  • Using the CODE formula and the magic feature on Excel, figure out the ASCII numbers for the person's first name ... with upper case letters, the codes should come out to be between 65 and 90
  • Here is a sample of the formula =CODE(B5) which you would use to find the ASCII CODE number of the cell in B5 ... or for another example =CODE(H33) would be used to find the ASCII CODE number of the cell in H33
  • Now in the next column, figure out how to write this number with 1's and 0's using bits ... remember that 8 bits make a byte ... each entry must begin "the bits are ..." and so a typical entry might be "the bits are 01000001"
  • Find one graphic on the Web about this person and add to your spreadsheet ... you may not use two such graphics and you must CITE YOUR SOURCE as usual

Week of 9/19

  • This week of 9/19, we begin Inspiration in seriousness and will be creating A2JAD.ISF in class on Thursday 9/22
  • One feature of Inspiration involves making connected symbols or icons ... you must have 4 connected from the main idea since we are in CP6 and your complete project will have a total of 6
  • Another skill involves unconnected symbols ... you must have 1 unconnected one with your 3 initials and the attribution statement that "the graphic came from the Web site of katrina.hush.cc"
  • Another skill involves using the library ... you must use a different library for each of your 6 symbols
  • Another skill involves linking a word to a Web site ... your main idea must be linked to the BLOG (Web log) located at http://katrina.hush.cc or at http://gatornet.chapin.edu/~techmsus/katrina/
  • Another skill involves adding a Web graphic with proper attribution ... you must have 1 graphic from http://katrina.hush.cc/ ... you must resize it so that it is small and not overwhelming
  • Another skill involves changing the color of the links ... each of your 4 links needs to be a different color
  • Another skill involves saving using the ISF ending ... you must SAVE using the format of A2JAD.ISF with your initials of course
  • This is due by tonight 9pm but my hope is that most of you get it done in class today

Older items

  • --On Thursday 9/15, we went over the tricky HTML command for color that needs to be used for A2 typing report (5 e-mails for 5 days thru 9/22 9pm ... you can use a different color each day ... we reviewed the Plan B approach if you cannot get on GatorNet to call a friend to send the e-mail for you
--We also began our Inspiration project to be named A2JAD.isf using your 3 initials ... we went over installing FIO tricks (figuring it out) which include finding the serial numbers inside the package, going to MY COMPUTER if installing on a PC, working with a member of your family or calling a friend on the phone
--We also had our first official Varsity typing test since Varsity is now the official level to pass (with proper finger placements) to allow you to stop the 5-15 weekly routine
--We also learned about Mr. D and Mr. M and their trip to Louisiana ...click here for their Web BLOG at http://gatornet.chapin.edu/~techmsus/katrina ... we learned that BLOG stands for Web Log and is a Web journal or diary
--We also learned that your Inspiration CD is to stay home and the package is to be preserved in a special location within your house ... we also reviewed the rule of "one software package, one install on one computer" unless we have something in writing to tell us otherwise
--We practiced "hands-up" which needs to be immediate and "no time delay" .. .this is important for other teachers at Chapin as well
--We practiced "laptops down" for which you have 30 or 33 seconds to save your work and possibly QUIT or EXIT from the application
--We reviewed the fact that you cannot ever leave your laptop alone during the day except if a teacher instructs you to and "covers" the room ... this was useful when we visited the "tech infrastructure" in room 412 to give us a sense of what Mr. M and Mr. D will be doing this weekend in Louisiana
--We reviewed the naming convention for taking notes in Microsoft Word, e.g. JADcomputernotes916.doc
--We learned that Inspiration files end in ISF which jokingly means Inspiration So Fine ... we learned that you are all free to play with Inspiration once installed at home but that next week in class we will learn more about the details and specs for the A2 Inspiration project on Mr. M and Mr. D
--We reviewed the fact that you MUST have Microsoft Office at home (Word, Excel PowerPoint) and connection to the Web ... it is crucial that I know if you or your parents need help ... Mr. Bergen

  • In class on 9/13 and 9/14 we learned that
    A) once you officially pass Varsity, the 5 days per week, 15 minutes per day requirement is over
    B) the key words for Web pages are HTML, BODY, HEAD, P and perhaps FONT COLOR
    C) taking notes in Microsoft Word and saving using 3 initials is the desired approach, e..g JADNotesComp914.doc
    D) Software honesty is important and you can install Inspiration on just one computer at home
    E) The Inspiration CD goes home in your pencil case and stays home

  • A1 involves sending 5 e-mail notes to your portfolio and to TurnIn-CP6 that demonstrate proof of typing practice ... Assignment A1 ... typing via GatorNet and reporting via GatorNet ... due 9/15 ... requirement through the fall ... 15 minutes a days, 5 days a week is our standard for type at home typing practice; typing on a word processor does not count as typing practice
  • Three ways to do typing practice: alphabetical, one minute test, Typing Pal
  • The subject needs to say A1 which stands for assignment 1 ("never leave your title blank")
  • You need to send to TurnIn-CP6 five days
  • You need to CC your portfolio
  • You need to avoid typos by using the computer spell checker and your own eyes!
  • You can use text for typing

We will discuss this paragraph in italics on LIP orientation day .... Your last note needs to contain (1) info about your Inspiration CD (2) info about whether your have First Class Plan A installed and working at home and (3) needs to include the honesty header graphic.

Our first day is Thursday 9/8 ... we will be discussing

  • Proper care of the laptops ... the hinge ... the latch
  • Sending to your portfolio and turnin-cp6
  • Plan A and Plan B GatorNet access
  • Mrs. McCreery's comments below

notes from Mrs. McCreery Thursday morning spoken on 10/14/04
  • The machine does not belong to you ... it belongs to the school and I represent the school ... so you might say these machines belong to me.
  • Accidents might happen, negligence better not.
  • If you are using your laptop in any way contrary to what your teacher wants, you are in big trouble.
  • From now on, I will hold you responsible for every word you send on e-mail; if you e-mail each other during class, you are in big trouble.
  • On your own time, you can send e-mail, but you better not gossip, bully or tease. We have a list of core values. The #1 core value is respect.
  • If you can't say it in front of me, in front of Mr. Clancy, in front of Mr. Bergen, in front of my grandmother, you should not write it on e-mail.
  • From this second on, we are recommitted to responsible behavior.
  • I trust you; I know you can handle this!
