English CP9 Assignment Feb 2007
(Ms. Taylor, Ms. Means, Ms. O'Hara)
Class 9 Things Fall Apart Hyper-Text Explication
Task:
Your task is to explicate a paragraph, as assigned by your teacher, from Achebe's novel using hyper-links. "To explicate" means to describe in detail or explain the "causes, context, and consequences of a thing." (Wikipedia). To "hyper-link" means to link to another text. You will present your explication electronically, on a Web site that you create. You will work with a partner and have in-class time (two days) and homework time to complete this project.
Here is a sample by Jane Doe ... click here ... you can then use the SOURCE CODE to create your own hyperlinks.html document ("yes, that needs to be the name of the document on your Web account")
Your presentation, then, should be a copy of your Achebe paragraph that includes the following:
- hyper-links to your own explications of three words within your assigned paragraph
(which you will retype)
- hyper-links to the Web sites where you found your information, so that you give credit to your sources (the links should appear within your explications)*
- Note: You should make use of at least two different web sites overall.
Criteria for Grading:
Your three documents should be ..
- clearly and efficiently written
- elucidating (i.e., shed light on the meaning of the passage)
- accurate
neatly and correctly formatted (links work, book titles are italicized/underlined, quotes are properly integrated, punctuation and capitalization are correct)

Assignment A10
I would like you to write a paragraph on your blog page in which you comment on and propose what your real iSpace "area of expertise" might be, and which Class 9 teacher (who knows a lot about your topic) you might choose to be a "reader of your iSpace chosen topic." I will clarify in class. Avoid broad topics and "keep it narrow and specialized." This is due by Friday 12/08. Once you have written your A10 paragraph on your blog, please COPY and PASTE it into an e-mail to TurnIn-CP9 (ML*) and your portfolio.
This week,
Mr. Lear is coming to our CP9 class to talk about Java. Assignment A10 must be done as homework outside of class. It is due by Friday 9pm.
-- Thursday 11:24 Class ... we meet in 29 as usual
-- Friday 12:52 Class ... we are meeting in 41 not 39 since video conferencing is going on in 39 for a Middle School class

In Class 9 Dance in the winter term, we do a large unit of American dance history, specifically focusing on black dance in America and what its influence was on jazz dance and jazz music. Some of the people/dances we study are Katherine Dunham, Josephine Baker, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Alvin Ailey, Arthur Mitchell, Chuck Davis, the Juba, the Cakewalk and the Charleston/Jitterbug/Lindy Hop. The girls haven't been introduced to this yet, but we will start in January and they will end up having to do a short paper on the topic of their choice relating to this unit.

Assignment A9 (after Thanksgiving) in class
- Previous spreadsheet skills covered: using formulas, using the & symbol, formatting text, using the magical "bottom right" spot to replicate patterns
- New spreadsheet skills needed for this exercise: how to graph data, how to do percentage increase, how to format text as currency, how to generate a sequence of years
- Create a SS for this problem intended to get each student doing a financial projection which is sometimes called a financial model. Barbara's job pays $20,000 in 2005 with an 8% raise per year. Carol's job pays $25,000 in 2005 with a 6% raise per year and Donna's job pays $30,000 in 2005 with a 4% raise per year. Please include a paragraph in your spreadsheet that demonstates wrapping and merging (like this one) and do the projection for each year from 2006 to 2033. Please make the headings colorful and angled at 45 degrees. Please include a graph.
- Send the attached file with subject of A9 to both TurnIn-CP9 and your portfolio
- Please do not work with a partner on this one
Assignment A8: Next Phase of CP9 (Oct 30 to Nov 23)
- Click here for http://www.newseum.org which gives you the FRONT page of 400 U.S. and international newspapers
- Here are topics in the news (Darfur, NY Governor Election 11/7/06, Congressional Election 11/7/06, Clinton/Obama Election 2008) for all of you who are "almost adults and much closer to age twenty than age zero" ... for each topic, you are to use your iSpace Web page to create a section of information, thoughts and actions
- The speaker who came to Chapin on Wed 10/25 was from IRC which has a Web site of www.theirc.org
- Ms. Moy ("remember her ;-) from Middle School") has a lot to say to her about her time as intern for IRC and what she thinks you should be doing

Here are the SPECS for this assignment
- you need to maintain your blogger Web page in diary/journal fashion with at least 2 entries per week telling the world what you are doing
- you need to get smarter about Darfur, the Governor race in NY State (6 candidates) and the Congressional Race in the district you live in
- Your iSpace Web page needs to contain links, thoughts and information about the 3 topics ... please remember just like you learned in CP6 that "content comes before style" and you can make your Web page look nicer after you have some content
- This is a multi-week project that will take us from now through Thanksgiving
- You need to post an audio file on your Web page that includes an audio clip with both Ms. Moy's voice and your voice
- You need to post an iFlash card stack on your Web page that contains 10 questions about Election Day
- You can use audioblogger via a telephone to do this
- If you choose to write your Congress representative or Senator, please mention that in your blog ... here is a link to both find and write your representative ... click here
REMEMBER TO
link between your iSpace Web page and your blogger page
avoid names and follow our Web guidelines
cite your sources and always include the specific URL of the Web page you got the text or graphic from, including the blog page ... reminder that you cannot take graphics from other sites unless the images are "copyright friendly" or you have permission
IMPORTANT CP9 Survey due by end of Monday 10/23/06 ... 9pm

- A7 ... have you created your iSpace Web page and used one of the templates in our CP9 Wiki section to make the page work? Your login is your 3 initials (e.g. JAD) and your password is your special word (e.g. Yankees2000) Answer: ???
WebPage Guidelines ... have you looked thoroughly at this gatornet.chapin.edu/~techmsus/WebGuidelines? if not, please DIN ("do it now"). Thanks! Answer: ???
please copy and paste the above section and send to TurnIn-CP9 (ML*) and Portfolio by end of Monday ... please be honest, something I have valued in our relationship since way back in 2003 when most of us had CP6 in the first LIP class. I have not given you deadlines to finish all of these things yet, so no one is in trouble ... relax!
I am trying to get all these things done by end of this week, Friday 10/27 for all 55 of you
Remember that there are tips, instructions and hints on each item on our CP9 Web page
It is usually hard to get more than one thing done during a CP9 class and so you may need to get 1 of these done at home or at school outside of class ... sb
Assignment A7: your iSpace Web page
- Using your 3 initials as your login and your "special word" as your password, you can now begin making your iSpace Web page
- The templates for iSpace.html for your WEB FOLDER is now in the CP9 Wiki section of Public Conferences
- There are several templates including a very cool one by Mr. Lucey using CSS ("cascading style sheets"). You can choose the one you want and change your mind later.
- To use a template, you copy and paste it. Then you go to your Web Publishing Folder on your Web account and Create a New Document. You paste it the template and rename the document as iSpace.html. If you are using the OLD version of First Class, the Web Publishing Folder is called Home Page. If your 3 initials and your special password, please send me an e-mail or see me in class and I will fix for you ... sb
Assignment A6: iFlash
- The iFlash Web link is now on the main Current Students Web page
- It contains a sample CP9 iFlash Quizzer that I made
- Please submit an iFlash sample relating to one of your current classes. It needs to have at the least 33 cards. Send to TurnIn-CP9 and your portfolio
Assignment A5: Audacity and audio.chapin.edu
- There is an assignment for you on audio.chapin.edu that involves Audacity and the FIO song from 2003 and the new release from 2006 in Spanish! You can learn about Audacity and download it using the iPod Web page .... audacity can be downloaded from http://audacity.sourceforge.net
- Please do NOT try to make an MP3 file using audacity ... use the feature to save as a WAV file
- If you cannot figure out how to make your WAV file into an MP3 file, the plan B is to send in via TurnIn and Portfolio
- Here is the lesson on using iTunes to make an MP3 file ... drag the WAV file into iTunes, e.g. A5JAD.wav ... now see if a menu choice says CONVERT TO MP3 ... if it doesn't then use PREFERENCES and ADVANCED to make it burn or import to MP3 ... once converted to MP3, you will have TWO files that say A5JAD ... if you quite iTunes and search for A5JAD, you will find the folder where the MP3 file lives and you can drag it to your desktop for uploading to audio.chapin.edu
