Suggestions to Users
- See someone from the tech team to help you in person
- Please remember that moving files into a folder does not change their status; they still take up K and MEG
- 1,000 bytes (keystrokes) = 1 K (kilobytes) and 1,000K = 1 megabytes ... 1000 meg = 1 gigabyte
- most of you have between 5 megabytes and 500 megabytes on our system ... we do not want anyone to have more than 200 megabytes on our system
- you can have up to 1 gigabyte on our file server ... any Chapin employee can have an account
- please see http://gatornet.chapin.edu/~techmsus/servers/ for more info and send a note to HELP if you wish to have a file server
- typical e-mails take up 5-10 K, so storing 1000 such e-mails would be 10,000K which is 10 meg
- even storing 5000 such e-mails would only be 50,000K which is 50 meg
- since we give each FacStaff user 200 meg, it is generally not text e-mails which cause the problem
- storing hundreds of graphics or dozens of videos usually is the problem
- Files in your mailbox, in sub-folders or on your desktop all count as part of your storage allocation; however files in public conferences or FacStaff conferences do NOT count as part of the storage allocation
- Each FacStaff member can have a portfolio which can be useful for extra storage ... the portfolio does NOT count against your account
- there is a wonderful feature called SUMMARIZE SELECTED under the MESSAGE MENU which can be used to take hundreds of e-mails (perhaps to parents) and combine then into ONE Microsoft Word document that can then be saved on your computer and backed up onto your file server
- Click here to see what a user sees when he/she tries to send e-mail (when over the limit)
- Click here to see what others see when sending e-mail to someone who is over the limit
- We have accounts on www.box.net that can provide you with 500 meg of disk space accessible from any machine that can get onto the Web (home or school) ...
