Important Rules for Students

  • Your 100-percent cooperation is crucial just as it was in October 2003 when we began the LIP program with Mrs. McCreery
  • iPods can be used only in the student lounge or under the supervision of your Class 8 teachers in their classrooms
  • Any iPod at Chapin that is used in violation of the above will be confiscated and given to Mr. Sullivan
  • Listening to music when sitting at a computer anywhere at Chapin has been against the rules for years ... the only place you can listen to music is the student lounge ... this has nothing to do with iPods but has been a Chapin rule for years
  • We need to "please be honest" regarding what is put onto our iPods ... we have put that phrase onto the first 20 iPods that arrived at Chapin in September 2005

Instructions for Uploading/Downloading to our Audio File Server

  1. Click here to go to audio.chapin.edu ("no www")
  2. Login in with our generic login ("begins with a C") and password ("begins with a W") ... eventually we will be changing this system but for now, we are all pioneers and just getting started
  3. Download the MP3 file and listen to the instructions
  4. Record your response using Audacity or First Class or your iTalk device. Change the file to an MP3 format using iTunes.
  5. Your file name must be of the form CuentosJaneD.mp3 or ContesJaneD.mp3 ... your French or Spanish or Latin teacher will always give you the key SHORT word like Cuentos or Contes ... please avoid spaces ... please make sure the files are TRULY mp3 files and not just named with the MP3 suffix ... no spaces but in the form of Topic + First Name + Initial of Last Name then .MP3 ... this is very important!
  6. Choose POST REPLY
  7. Make sure your REPLY includes your standard 3 letter initials from CP6 and CP7 not your name. Even though this is a password protected Web site, we are going to be cautious in our first year and avoid names!
  8. Choose MANAGE ATTACHMENTS, then CHOOSE FILE, then UPLOAD
  9. Good luck! Only teachers can create new threads for now! Eventually we will learn to use SEARCHING TOOLS

Honesty Links and Info

  • From one school ... We use a Fair Use and Copyright Guidelines Web site for teachers at http://www.mediafestival.org/copyrightchart.html ... We assume the information is up to date. According to this Web site: ... Music for Integration into Multimedia / Video Projects ... Up to 10% of a copyrighted musical composition may be reproduced, performed and displayed as part of a multimedia program produced by an educator or student for educational purposes. ... Source: Fair Use Guidelines for Educational Multimedia ... Some authorities site a maximum length of 30 seconds. (www.indiana.edu), some do not mention a maximum (Tina Ivany, UCSD, 12/08/95). See below. [on website] ... Yes, it would be. According to Copyright for Schools, 3rd ed. (Carol Simpson, Linworth Publishing, 2001), using audiovisual materials in a school setting lies in meeting four tests of acceptable use: -Face to face teaching -Presented by teachers or pupils -In a classroom or similar setting of a nonprofit educational institution -With a legal copy of the work "When a sound recording is played publicly, the composer of the music is entitled to a royalty..." Further, "A work may involve three copyrights: one for the music itself, a second for the recording, and a third on the arrangement."
  • With respect to the copyright question, I think the best answer that I can give you is that this is somewhat uncharted territory; we are working out interpretations of the Millennium Digital Copyright Act [1], the TEACH Act [2], and fair use language [3], [4] ... four links below (from tech person at Brearley)

e-mail letter that went to parents on June 14, 2005

Dear Parents of the Class of 2010,

I am writing to you in case you missed these announcements several weeks ago at the Class 7 parent meeting.

(1) In the fall of 2005, Class 8 students (Class of 2010) will once again be pioneering the technology trails at Chapin. After an orientation period in September, your daughter and her classmates will be using these IPODs on occasion as part of French, Spanish, Latin, Music, Public Speaking and CP8 ("Computer Proficiency 8"). Class 8 girls will learn to use the full range of capabilities of their IPODs and ITALK devices as part of CP8 in the fall. As part of this initiative, there will be a partnership between teachers and students in Class 8 in moving Chapin forward and using these tools in the curriculum. The Technology Department will have loaners of IPODs and ITALKs to cover various situations.

(2) Because we are contemplating an even bigger initiative for Fall 2006 for your daughters, please do not purchase any new computer for your daughter this summer!

Have a great summer everyone.
