Top Three Suggestions for your first few weeks at Chapin regarding technology

besides sending notes to HELP@CHAPIN.EDU
  • Take advantage of Lynne Schalman (computer faculty trainer) who works out of the faculty lounge ("the rooms with the mailboxes") for occasional help or regular help ("you can have a time slot with her for 20-40 minutes each week which works like piano lessons to help you make ongoing progress and get questions answered
  • Take advantage of Room 39 Drop In Help Desk 8am-5pm or phone numbers 212.570.4998 and 212.570.4995 (extensions 4998 and 4985) from 8AM to 5PM ... Charles Bell, Austin Lear, Victor Concepcion

Top Three Comments about Backups

  • It is not a question of IF your computer will go bad, but WHEN; we have had several instances in the last few years where a computer was stolen or went bad and all the person's files were lost. It is not a fun experience!
  • By moving certain files (not movies) into your GatorNet mailbox, you have backups that will stay there until you leave Chapin. You can access those files from anywhere in the world.
  • There are two excellent ways we have to protect yourself via backups: memory sticks, and the Usave file server. There is one way to avoid backups: do nothing. But doing nothing ("not making backups") is like driving cross country without a spare tire ("risky, foolish, likely to cause you a major hassle one of these days")

Facts about GatorNet (which other schools call First Class)

  • The Web page of gatornet.chapin.edu ("no www") is one click from the main Chapin web page (www.chapin.edu) and provides access to logging in when at home or on the road via two methods
  • GatorNet allows us to easily make Web pages, split windows and have organized folders, auto-forward e-mail to palm pilots and other accounts, send attached files, maintain personal and institutional mailing lists

Top Three Interesting Facts about Macs vs PCs

  • The majority of our students have PCs at home; in room 39 there is an alternating pattern of Macs and PCs; there are now 4 PCs on the main floor of the library and one at the top of the stairs
  • Putting the 3 letter identifier at the end of the file name, e.g. Chapin.doc ('Microsoft Word") or Berendsen.xls ("Excel") or Fairfax.cwk ("Appleworks") or Gordon.ppt ("Powerpoint") or Stringfellow.isf ("Inspiration") or Theunick.jpg ("graphic") or Hayot.html ("web page")
  • If you want the widest variety of people to be able to read your document, it is best to circulate it as a PDF file ("portable document format") or RTF file ("rich text format")
